Celebrate New Beginnings With Us At The Duwamish River Festival

SEATTLE -- On Sat., Aug. 7, 2021, the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition/TAG, its partner organizations, and federal, state, and local agencies will host the city's 15th Annual Duwamish River Festival/Festival del Río Duwamish at South Park Plaza (8456 Dallas Ave S, Seattle WA 98108) and surrounding areas in the South Park neighborhood.

The 15th Annual Duwamish River Festival will celebrate 20 years of community coming together to support a River For All! The FREE festival goes from 12:00pm-5:00pm on Saturday August 7, 2021. The festival will begin at 12:00pm, with an opening ceremony led by the Duwamish Tribe.

As in previous years, the 2021 festival will feature a family-friendly mix of activities, arts, culture and entertainment. Come celebrate community and the Duwamish River! The event brings our communities together to celebrate our diversity and the cleanup and restoration of the Duwamish River. Throughout the day, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy interactive educational booths, Mercadito local vendors, youth art activities, free vaccination and health clinic, free air filters, dance, music and hear from special guests. We look forward to a safe, beautiful community event and continue to follow the most up-to-date CDC COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Next Tuesday, July 27, from 6:00-7:30pm, the Port of Seattle and the Northwest Seaport Alliance invite you to an interactive, virtual community workshop conducted via webinar on Port of Seattle-related clean air and climate solutions as the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy moves to implement the goal of phasing out emissions of diesel particulate matter and greenhouse gas emissions from seaport activities by 2050. Superfund Updates- Jorgensen Forge Sediment Cleanup

EPA is taking public comments on a proposed cleanup plan for contaminated sediments in an early action area within the Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund site. Work done in 2014 by the Earle M. Jorgensen Company left some of the targeted pollution in place. The company has proposed several cleanup options to EPA for the remaining pollution, and the public is encouraged to understand and comment on the cleanup options.

Jorgensen Forge is a steel and aluminum forging and distribution facility on the banks of the Lower Duwamish Waterway, and part of the Superfund site. It is located at 8531 East Marginal Way South in Tukwila, Washington. The riverbanks and sediments next to the facility are contaminated with toxic metals and PCBs that may pose a risk to people’s health and to the environment. Some of the contaminated riverbanks and sediments were removed in 2014 before the larger Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund cleanup began. The Jorgensen Forge site is next to other cleanup areas, including Boeing Plant 2 (north of Jorgensen), and across the Waterway from Terminal 117. Cleanup of the Jorgensen Forge facility that is located above the riverbank, in the upland area, is being led by the Washington Department of Ecology.

Affordable Housing Update

After 4 years of intense and collaborative work towards their 3-prong approach to develop affordable housing (including development of a Multi-Purpose Building, development of new affordable housing, and preservation of currently existing affordable housing), the Duwamish Valley Affordable Housing Coalition (DVAHC), in partnership with DRCC, Villa Comuntaria, and community, is thrilled to announce that their advocacy and cooperation with the City of Seattle’s Office of Housing (OH) has resulted in land acquisition in South Park. Legislation authorizing OH to acquire two parcels in South Park for affordable housing development was passed unanimously by City Council today. Council Bill 120114 requires the housing developed on these parcels to be affordable to households making at or below 60% of area median income (AMI), which is equivalent to $69,400 for a family of four. We are feeling very hopeful for the future of affordable housing in the Duwamish Valley and looking forward to next steps, including community engagement for consensus on issues such as AMI and policies including “right-to-return” and “community preference”. Our community needs to thrive in place!
