It’s Time to Take Action

We are deeply concerned for the health of the Duwamish Valley communities as a result of proposed changes to how EPA and members of the Lower Duwamish Waterway Group intend to clean up our Duwamish River. WITHOUT community consultation, EPA and these responsible parties recently proposed three changes to our river cleanup that increase toxic exposures and health risks to our community and undermine our hard-won river cleanup which violates EPA’s and Ecology’s environmental justice policies, ignores our local governments’ stated commitments to equity, and threatens to further exacerbate pronounced health disparities that have been documented in our communities. The Duwamish River must be recovered to standards that support our community and fishing for future generations. We demand health justice, especially for community members who have been historically marginalized, silenced, and disproportionately burdened with the legacy pollutants that have given rise to this cleanup.

Welcome to our DRCC Team

Dana Wu / 吳淑如 (she/they) is a proud Teochew, and eldest queer child of refugee parents displaced by and survived what some choose to call the "Vietnam War". Raised on the ancestral homelands of the Tongva and Gabrielino tribes, Dana relocated to the Salish Sea region in 2005 as a first-generation college graduate with degrees in Biology and Environmental Studies. Dana has embodied their passion for marine conservation, service learning community science, and environmental justice issues by working with various entities including the Student Conservation Association, Olympic National Park, Seattle Aquarium, City of Seattle's Environmental Justice Committee, Dynamic Waters LLC, among others. After serving two years as vice board chair, Dana is excited to return home and to continue supporting the whole DRCC family and our collective mission. In their spare time, Dana cultivates joy by gardening, cycling, bowling, and being a new chicken parent.

Jorge A. Lara was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico, and immigrated to the United States at the age of 18 seeking opportunity and prosperity. For ten years, Jorge worked various jobs learning the ins and outs of the service industry. While he valued his time in the service industry, after meeting an engineer in his workplace, he realized that he wanted to develop skills more suited for structural engineering and bridge-building. Jorge began his studies at Seattle University in 2017 and quickly became a dedicated and growing Engineer. He graduated in 2020. Just before the historic pandemic lockdown in March of 2020, Jorge met his wife Stephanie Gallardo. They married shortly after and now live in South Park with their pup Lola. Currently, you can find Jorge working with local youth on the Duwamish River Clean Up Coalition and continuing his studies as a Masters's candidate in Structural Engineering at the University of Washington.

Thank you to our local youth for completing the summer cohort working within their own communities building new skills and learning about Maritime and Green jobs.

Maritime High School - September Updates

The Maritime High School launched September 2nd, 2021 and the first project that students at Maritime High School are undertaking this fall is an exploration of the question “What Makes A Community?”—specifically in the context of the communities that have called the shores of the Duwamish River home.

Students have have spent time learning about the Duwamish Valley though walking tours, restoration project and learning to row aside all partners of the Maritime High School; Northwest Maritime Center, Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, Port of Seattle, and Highline School district.

Join us for the first Environmental Justice Mayoral Forum.
Join us for a civic conversation with Seattle’s mayoral candidates, Bruce Harrell and Lorena González, on climate change and environmental justice. Hear their views on how city policies can address future challenges. Engage with community groups and leaders actively working on these issues. This event is presented by our partner @seattleloveparks and Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition in partnership with Seattle-area environmental and climate justice organizations.
