Tools for Equitable Climate Resilience

Who is River Network?

River Network empowers and unites people and communities to protect and restore rivers and other waters that sustain all life. We envision a future with clean and ample water for people and nature, where local caretakers are well-equipped, effective and courageous champions for our rivers. We believe that everyone should have access to affordable, clean water and healthy rivers.

Why is this important?

All people have a right to clean and ample water that sustains life. To achieve this right for all communities, it is imperative for the river and watershed community to build a more diverse, equitable and inclusive movement. River Network is committed to being a catalyst and partner in this transformation.

Biases and disparities disproportionately burden communities of color, indigenous communities, and low-income communities with legacies of environmental damage and on-going harm that limit their access to healthy, life-sustaining waters. All voices must be included in River Network’s work to achieve more equitable solutions. Just as biodiversity strengthens natural systems, water protection work is made stronger by the contributions, experiences, perspectives, and values of different people and communities.

What toolkit?

With the support of the Kresge Foundation, River Network embarks on the journey of exploring climate resiliency strategies and equitable engagement of communities in climate resilience work. This two-part toolkit presents community-led research and knowledge and leadership development as essential tools for addressing the diverse risks posed by climate change (see “Fostering Community Leadership,” the accompanying tool). Each respective tool provides case studies regarding community-led research and leadership development, as well as comprehensive descriptions of the theory and practice of each strategy. These tools are grounded in showcasing the experts who are already implementing such strategies successfully in their communities, and bringing their experience to the table for the benefit of other community leaders who are championing similar efforts.
